The History of Candy Corn

Did you know that National Candy Corn Day is on October 30? Candy corn, originally called chicken feed, is a fall staple. Brach’s Confections alone crafts 7 billion pieces of the treat per year! So what is the history of this festive, tri-colored delight?

Candy corn was first created by an employee of Wunderle Candy Company, George Renninger, in 1888. Then in 1898, Goelitz Confectionery Company, now known as Jelly Belly, started to make them. Around the 1950’s, candy corn became a fall staple when people started to hand out individual candies. Even though this delicious treat is usually eaten around Halloween nowadays, it wasn’t always that way. It actually was penny candy that was sold and eaten year round. So next time you snack on candy corn, you can remember the history of this delicious fall treat!
