We often give others respect in our day-to-day interactions for various reasons. But how do we seek to gain this same type of respect ourselves?
Respect is not simply gained because of someone’s seniority or authority. For example, some children do not respect their parents, even though their parents are inherently older than them. Also, just because someone listens to someone else doesn’t mean they respect them. A person may be following the instructions of their boss, for instance, but it could just be to keep their job, not because they actually respect their boss. So how can we gain respect from others?
In order for someone to respect you, they have to either have a deep feeling of admiration for you or regard for your feelings. This is not something you can directly control, and therefore you can only act in a way that would be most likely to garner respect.
The best way to do this is to act in a way that is seen as right by yourself and others. Being nice to others and yourself is one way to do this, as is keeping your word. Helping others and treating others the way they would want to be treated is another way to garner respect. If you can be your best self to yourself and others, you can gain the respect of others, and both them and you will be happy with yourself!
