America is a nation of freedom. Early on, citizens capitalized on the uniquely American privilege of free speech and action to improve its laws and defy its injustices. This spanned the earliest slave revolts and abolitionist movements, and the Civil Rights era and nonviolence protests. Such noble yields could not separate the impurities that arose from the darker side of freedom. Littering, needless cruelty, dishonest politics–the list is endless.
In light of the dual-sided nature of freedom, all individuals ought to exercise responsibility as they relish the gift of freedom. Being responsible, according to the Oxford Languages Dictionary, can be defined as “having an obligation to do something, or having control over or care for someone, as part of one's job or role.” All humans have an obligation to care for their fellow man as they would want to be cared for, and Americans must steward their many freedoms for the good of each other and their country. Altogether, Americans possess an unrivaled amount of freedoms that influence their day-to-day lives, and it is important to use each and every one of them responsibly.
