The History of Bow Ties

Bow ties are simple snazzy accessories that are a great accompaniment to suits and tuxedos. But where do they come from?

Bow ties’ history actually begins in the 1600s in Europe, where Croatian mercenaries would tie scarves around their necks before fighting; most sources agree that the scarves were worn to close the opening of the top of their shirts. The royals and elite of France then began to imitate this by tying scarves around their necks, calling this style a “cravat” (from the French word for “Croat”). Although the history is fuzzy after the French adopted this style, it is known that both the necktie and bow tie came from it.

And there you have it! Next time you see someone wearing a bow tie, you can know that their stylish accessory has a history that involves Croatian mercenaries and French royalty!
