Whether enjoyed from the side of a musical truck, a sun-drenched porch, or at a summer party, ice cream is a delicious summer treat that nowadays just about everyone can enjoy. But just what is the history of this creamy, craveable classic?
Some sources state that the origins of ice cream can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where people may have used the freezing temperatures of the desert night to freeze water and create flavored shaved ice to beat the blazing heat. Similar desserts are thought to have been crafted in China and Persia as well. An ice-cream like dessert that used cream was invented in India around the 16th century. Ice cream didn’t appear in Europe until the 18th century, where the version most commonly known to Westerners took shape. As the icy treat’s popularity grew, its recipes became refined, and with the introduction of simplistic refrigeration around the 1950’s, its availability and the amount of flavors and parlors where it could be purchased expanded dramatically. Even today, new flavors are constantly being created, and there’s practically a kind for everyone to enjoy!
So next time you have a scoop (or two) of this delectable dessert, you can also remember the history of this timeless treat that is as unique as the many varieties it now boasts!
